Lifetime of work.
Wladyslaw (Walter) Marek was born in Lodygowice near Bielsko-Biala, Poland in 1944. He started wood sculpture in his early teenage years. He specializes in poplar and basswood carving, full figures and reliefs. His preferred finish in natural wood or wood stain. Most of his work expresses polish folklore and sacral themes. In 1981 during one of his visits in San Antonio, he finished a project of Way of the Cross, which was placed in Our Lady of Chestochowa Shrine on Beethoven Street.
In 1987 he made a model of church from Panna Maria, and presented it to the Pope John Paul II. Wladyslaw Marek participated in many contests and exhibitions in Poland. The works of Mr. Marek can be found in many museums in Bielsko-Biala, Nowy Sacz, Torun and Vatican. In 1994 Walter Marek permanently moved to San Antonio Texas. He is continuing to carve the sacred statues.
